Why Dook really postponed the game
The current perception is that Dook University has a better basketball team for the 2013-2014 season than the University of North Carolina. So why not come and play us to prove that?
On Wednesday, Feb. 12th, the annual rivalry between Dook and North Carolina was supposed to be held. But at 6:30pm, about two and a half hours prior to the scheduled tip-off, the game was officially canceled due to nearly half a foot of snow that covered the roads from Charlotte to Washington, D.C.
According to the ACC, if the referees can’t make it, most of the operations crew can’t make it, and the away team can’t make it, then the game should be canceled. But is it true that they couldn’t make the eleven mile trip from Cameron Indoor to the Dean E. Smith Center (even though the rumors are that Carolina offered them a ride to Chapel Hill)? Students and conspiracy theorists alike believe that the game was cancelled because Coach Ksyalkfnaoifosidnvsonefski (better known as Coach K) feared a game with a hostile crowd- one filled with thousands of angry students.
The last time this happened was a game against Maryland back in 2000 when the Terrapins went up against a crowd of more than 15,000 students filling the lower-level of the Smith Center. Can you imagine? A student section that over-took the lower level of the Dean Dome? That would be terrifying for a player, more so than being touched by a disgusting Cameron crazy in Cameron Indoor.
But wouldn’t that be the optimum time for a team to claim greatness over another? Even with the Smith Center being filled with a bunch of angry fans, wouldn’t that truly be the best way to prove that it is pure ability rather than the situation that wins a basketball game?
Yet Kshechefski must not have felt confident enough in his team to win the game. Is Jabari Parker not living up to his expectations? Was the final Plumlee really just an add-on scholarship because of his older brothers, rather than his own talent?
Whatever it was, it led to the game being postponed. So the game was delayed just over a week, with both teams having heavy game-schedules that week. And here we are again. Dook at another ‘disadvantage’ in that Carolina will have one more day of rest and preparation before gearing up to play the Blue Devils. The Tar Heels will take on Florida State in Tallahassee tonight while the Blue Devils will play at Georgia Tech late Tuesday evening.
But when it all comes down to it- there’s more passion on the Carolina side. After the game being canceled, there’s more hate and anger than there was before. Similarly to the title of Will Blythe’s book, “To Hate Like This Is To Be Happy Forever”, there seems to be such a joy in hating a rivalry that shares a road. But after having pulled out of the game on the 12th, it seems that the anger and hatred will be much higher. And even though students have signed a petition to have the Smith Center filled with students for the game this Thursday (which most likely will not happen), the passion from the Carolina side will be strong enough to scare the dookies straight back to their hellish campus.
So I will make a prediction. Despite the struggles through the season on the side of the Tar Heels, the numbers can’t lie. The Heels have beaten many teams ranked higher than them, they have strived at fast paced play, and their confidence is through the roof. So my prediction is this… This Thursday, following the 9pm game in the Dean E. Smith Center, I will rush Franklin Street for the first time in my college career. I will jump over flames and scream until I no longer have a voice. I will stare at the stars from the roof of Kenan, stay up until the sun rises and run through campus without any clothes on. The Tar Heels will beat Dook and claim their seventh ACC win in a row. Because, while this year has been riddled with inconsistency and a lack of confidence, we know one thing… These boys want this more than anything. And that passion and heart will win the game because that is what Carolina Basketball is all about.
***For all of you with concerns, the technical spelling of Coach K’s last name is not truly known, and the Blue Devils attend Dook University***
